Lionism began in the United States in 1917 when a group of independent clubs responded to an idea presented to them by a Chicago insurance agent named Melvin Jones.
The idea was one of service as a group to their fellow man without regard to; politics, race, religion or the personal interest of members.

A conference was called of some 25 independent clubs on June 7, 1917. The organization was born out of this meeting.

Lions Club International (LCI) has grown to include 1.4 million men and women in 46,000 clubs located in 194 countries and geographical regions.
